The lens choice is the big decision
- Monofocal: clear at one distance; reading glasses usually stay. From €3,200 per eye.
- Multifocal or trifocal: more distances in focus, more chance of halos at night. From €3,700 per eye.
- Toric: corrects astigmatism too.
- Blended vision: one eye set a little nearer; try it with contact lenses first.

How it runs
One eye first, the second about a week later. Each takes 30 to 60 minutes and you go home the same day. You can't drive yourself home after treatment. Have someone collect you or book a taxi, bring sunglasses because light will feel harsh, and leave the Luas or DART for another day. Expect three or four days of blur, glare and mild discomfort, with drops.
The risks
Retinal detachment, under- or over-correction, glare and halos (more with multifocal lenses), a second operation, rarely permanent loss of sight, and a clouding behind the new lens later that a quick laser treatment clears.
Cost
€2,900 to €3,700 per eye, €5,800 to €7,400 for both. It treats defective eyesight, so tax relief at 20% should apply.
Questions people ask
How old do you have to be for lens replacement?
Usually about 50 or over. Some younger people with high long sight are offered it after an assessment.
Will I need reading glasses after lens replacement?
With a monofocal lens, usually yes. Multifocal lenses and blended vision reduce the need.
How many visits will it take?
An assessment, two operation days a week or so apart, and check-ups after each eye, so expect several trips over a month or two.
